Canadian Masters Championship 2012 at Boucherville and St.Lambert GUY HEMMINGS WILL BE HONORARY PRESIDENT Boucherville – A tremendous addition to our event, Guy Hemmings, an emblematic figure of Quebec curling, has agreed to take the position of honorary president of the Canadian Masters Championship 2012, which will take place on at the Boucherville and St.Lambert Curling clubs, March 26 to April 1st.
Guy Hemmings has been a major promoter of curling in Québec; he also happens to be one of the best-known Quebec players across Canada. This is due mainly to his numerous appearances as Quebec skip at the Brier, the men's annual Canadian curling championship. Guy Hemmings played four times (1998-1999-2001-2003) in this major event, twice as a member of the St.Lambert Club. He has been runner-up finalist twice, an accomplishment unmatched by any other Quebec rink in over 20 years. Moreover, his good-naturedness and easygoing manner have made him one of the most popular players at each of those events.
Guy Hemmings is still competing at the highest level on the national stage; he is also a curling commentator for games broadcast on RDS, a French television sport network. In his own words, it is a tremendous honour to have been chosen, and it is with great pleasure that he has agreed to support the organizing committee.
A VERY HIGH-LEVEL CHAMPIONSHIP Choosing the province of Quebec to host such a high-level curling championship reflects the surging interest for the sport in the province driven mainly by its recent inclusion in the winter Olympics. The 2012 Canadian Masters Curling Championship will showcase men's and women's rinks from every province and also from the Yukon and the North-West Territories. Players competing in the Championship must be at least 60 years in age and have qualified through extensive provincial and regional play downs to reach the national event.
The Boucherville and St.Lambert clubs are currently putting the final touches on preparations which are progressing smoothly. Many sponsors have already been brought on board including; Autocars Skyport, Rio Tinto Alcan, Labatt, and the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et des Sports du Québec. And, the organizing committee expects to make further sponsorship announcements in the near future.
Over 150 volunteers are required to ensure the event’s success.. Those interested in volunteering should contact the Boucherville or St.Lambert Curling Clubs as soon as possible. |
